CHAPTER NINE
Early on the morning of the ECO Parade, Anthea drove into Silchester and came back with two big boxes.
âBoys!â she called as she came in through the door. âCome here and see what Iâve got!â
They arrived in the hall still in their pyjamas and dressing-gowns, munching on Weetabix. Hannah followed behind, holding a mug of the strong, sweet breakfast tea without which she couldnât function in the mornings.
âLook!â said Anthea proudly, and held out a box to Daniel. He peered at it.
âOwl, ten to twelve,â he read.
âThis oneâs Owl, eight to ten,â reported Andrew. âI wonder what they are,â he added interestedly.
âOpen it and see,â said Anthea. Daniel looked up at her. He had a dawning, awful suspicion as to what might be in the boxes. But dutifully he began to tug at the ties which held the lid on. Andrew got there before him.
âItâs feathers!â he said.
âItâs a costume!â said Anthea. Daniel finally got the lid of his box off and looked inside. An owlâs face looked back at him. With slightly shaking fingers, he picked it up. It was a whole hollow head, made out of brown feathers and furry material. There were two big yellow eyes with eyeholes punched in them, and an orange plastic beak. And curled up inside the box was a furry, feathery owlâs body.
âItâs got wings that you can flap as you walk along,â said Anthea in a pleased voice. Andrew and Daniel exchanged glances.
âDo we have to wear them?â asked Daniel. âCouldnât we just have face paint like last year?â Anthea looked surprised.
âNo,â she said sharply. âDonât be so silly. Now, when youâve finished your breakfast you can go and put them on. Weâve got to leave at eleven.â She looked from Danielâs glum face to Andrew, who was staring thoughtfully at his costume. âCome on, both of you,â she exclaimed. âLook a bit more cheerful! This paradeâs going to be fun! And youâll both look splendid.â She glanced at Hannah. âWonât they, Hannah?â
âSplendid,â echoed Hannah, in indeterminate tones. Anthea peered suspiciously at her, then started to walk briskly up the stairs.
âNow hurry up with your breakfast,â she said over her shoulder. âWe donât want to be late for the start of the parade.â
When she had gone round the corner, Daniel turned agonized eyes on Hannah.
âWe canât wear these!â he said. âWeâll look like complete nerds!â
âIt wonât be so bad,â said Hannah. âNo one will know itâs you inside.â
âThey will,â said Andrew. âTheyâll know itâs us because Mummy will tell them.â Hannah started laughing.
âYouâve got a point there,â she said. She looked back at Daniel, who was miserably fingering his costume. âLook, Daniel,â she said kindly, âput it on when youâve finished your breakfast, and if it looks too awful, maybe your mother will say you donât have to wear it.â
âOK,â said Daniel. He dropped the box on the floor and gave it a little kick. âBut I bet she wonât,â he added gloomily.
